James M. Furey, Sr. received his B.A. and J.D. Degrees from St. John's University.

After experience in the claim departments of Liberty Mutual and Hartford, and as an in house trial lawyer he was appointed attorney of record for Hartford in the downtown New York office in 1961. Following this he joined Clune Furey and O'Brien and in 1968, he founded the firm, which was to become Furey, Furey, Leverage, Manzione, Williams & Darlington, P.C.

Mr. Furey has been engaged in an active schedule of Trial and Appellate work since his admission to the Bar.  The bulk of his cases have involved the defense of personal injury actions, including malpractice and products liability. In addition, however, he has tried matters representing plaintiffs in personal injury actions, as well as defense of criminal actions both felonies and misdemeanors, Surrogate's Court as counsel and guardian, civil rights and commercial litigation.  He has tried cases in all of the counties of the metropolitan area, as well as in federal court in the Eastern District and Southern District.  He has argued appeals in the New York State Court of Appeals, three out of our four Appellate Divisions, and in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in our federal system.  He has tried approximately two hundred cases to a jury verdict and has argued approximately one hundred appeals.   He was named in a New York Law Journal article as one of a number of outstanding personal injury defense lawyers.

Mr. Furey has lectured at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, Presbyterian Hospital, the International College of Surgeons, the Nassau Bar Association, Suffolk Bar Association, New York State Trial Lawyers, Hospital Trustees Association, American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys and various other professional groups.

Mr. Furey is a member of the arbitration panel for the United States Eastern District. He has conducted four hearings, two as a member of the three-person panel and twice as the sole arbitrator.

Mr. Furey is also memberof the Nassau Bar Judiciary Committee who assisted in approving the initial panel of arbitrators for the Nassau County District Court
